Purchased day lilies in containers can be planted at any time provided they are kept moist. If they are purchased as bare root tubers, they should be planted as soon as possible or placed in containers with average growing medium until planting. They grow very fast! However, you can store them in the bag they came in with the root wrapping material surrounding the roots. Store them up to one week, keeping the roots and packing material damp. Store in a cool, shady location with adequate ventilation. Place the plant in a hole slightly deeper then the roots are longer being careful NOT to cover the top of the leaf or fan.
Day lilies are one of the most adaptable, hardy, trouble free plants and will grow in just about any soil. They are avoided by deer, mice, and other pesky critters and are usually insect and disease free! They will grow in full sun or partial shade requiring only 4 hours of daylight.
Day lilies should be planted far enough apart to enjoy their unique foliage before and after blooming (16 to 24 inches apart and for mass plantings 12 inches apart). Remove any air pockets by firmly packing the soil and watering thoroughly. Day lilies make a nice presentation if they are planted in masses of triangular groups of 3.
They do not require a lot of daily watering and will tolerate semi-arid soil. However, if allowed to dry out, they will stop producing blooms. When watering is needed, be sure to water deeply enough to reach the roots.
You can purchase any of our “Power Grow” fertiliser products through our on line store.
FALL: Do not over fertilise especially with a high nitrogen base unless there is a minimum of 80% slow release with the nitrogen (the first number in the mix 10 -20-20). If using a different mix without slow release, use a high mineral content and a level below 10 of the nitrogen count (the next two numbers in the mix 10- 20-20 ) instead and make sure there is an iron level below 5%. Too much nitrogen will promote excessive leaf growth and few blooms. The high mineral count will promote good root growth, bloom color and count, and a much stronger healthier plant. Apply the fall fertiliser evenly around the leaves at ground level or before covering the plant roots. Use about two tablespoons per plant. Fertilize every fall for healthy plants and multitudes of blooms for the following spring.
SPRING: Do not over fertilise plants especially with a high nitrogen base unless there is a minimum of 80% slow release with the nitrogen (the first number in the mix 10 -20-20). If using a different mix without slow release, use a high mineral content and a level below 10 of the nitrogen count (the next two numbers in the mix 10- 20-20 ) instead and make sure there is an iron level below 5%. Too much nitrogen or iron at once when mixing with the plant at time of planting will promote diseases and excessive leaf growth. The high mineral count will promote good root growth, bloom color and count, and a much stronger, healthier plant. Apply two tablespoons of our “Power Grow Spring Flower Food” evenly around the base of each plant before or when the leaves are approximately six inches in length. For more than plant, use one cup per 10 square feet or four cups per 50 square feet applied evenly around the group. After blooming is completed and during the fall, apply our “Power Grow Fall Bulb Food” 10-20-20 evenly at the rates listed above.
It is wise to mark each Day lily planted with a stake and a weather resistant marker, as soon varieties die back during winter and show no green leaves. This will also help to identify it in case you care to split, move, and propagate them to another location, or purchase more.
Daylilies can be containerized in larger pots or containers (such as empty whiskey barrels). They make a great accent in this manner when surrounded by smaller plants! Split and re-pot every five years or so. Keep moist and fertilize fall and spring with our Power Grow fertilizers.
